Learn Japanese Grammar ~ beki (~ べき)
Japanese Grammar ~ beki (~ べき) has meaning "should do ; must do".
Formation [接続]
Verb-dictionary form + べき/べきだ
Exception: する => すべき/するべき
Grammar Notes:
This grammar is used to say this is something we should do or must do.
- 知るべき (shiru beki) = I should know
You can also use it in the past tense with だった (datta) / でした (deshita)
- 知るべきだった (shiru beki datta) = I should have known
To say the opposite, “you must not do”
Use grammar べきではない (beki dewa nai)
例文
約束は守るべきだ。
Yakusoku wa mamoru beki da.
You should keep your promises.
何をすべきか、もう彼女の心は決まっていた。
Nani wo subeki ka, mou kanojo no kokoro wa kimatteita.
She had already decided what she should do.
早く帰宅すべきだ。
Hayaku kitaku subeki da.
You should go home early.
真実を言うべきだ。
Shinjitsu wo iu beki da.
You should tell the truth.
私はそれについてもっと知るべきだ。
Watashi wa sore ni tsuite motto shiru beki da.
I should know more about that.
おもちゃは、先ず安全であるべき。
Omocha wa, mazu anzenn de aru beki.
Safety comes first for toys.
何をすべきか、もう彼女の心は決まっていた。
Nani wo subeki ka, mou kanojo no kokoro wa kimatteita.
She had already decided what she should do.
小学生の先生は、子どもが好きであるべきだと思います。
Shogakusei no sensei wa, kodomo ga suki de aru bekida to omoimasu.
I believe that elementary school teachers should love children.
このことについてもっと早くに知るべきだった。
Kono koto ni tsuite motto hayaku shiru beki datta.
I should have known about this much sooner.
